American Sterling Silver Tea Strainer

$360 $324.00
  • Rhode Island, circa 1920 by Whiting
  • Dimensions: 5 7/8 inches length

Tea strainers emerged in the 17th century in Europe when tea drinking became extremely popular and readily available to those outside of China. Given the surge in tea drinking in Europe and America, the tea strainer was designed to separate the loose leaves from the hot water. Many silver examples were accompanied by a drip stand or bowl where the strainer could be placed in between cups of tea. Tea’s new fashion status attracted silversmiths to create a wide variety of tea-related accessories that were often turned into elaborate pieces.

A charming American Sterling Silver Double Handled Tea Strainer. Having a fluted bowl and the handles having flowing, sinuous handles, it is a lovely example of an art nouveau design. There is a script monogram S on one of the handles. Crisp detail makes this tea strainer very attractive in design.
