American Sterling Silver Tea Strainer

$350.00
  • American, circa 1920
  • Dimensions: 5 7/8 inches length

One of the most collectable “parts” of a tea service is the sterling silver tea strainer which has been used for centuries. This came about as no one really enjoyed loose tea leaves while drinking their tea. After loose leaves were brewed in hot water, the strainer enabled the hostess to filter the leaves out while pouring tea in each individual cup. At this time, tea strainers became an important addition to the tea service. Thus, during the 18th and 19th centuries, when having tea was an important as well as fashionable social event, tea strainers were made for the luxury market by almost every silversmith.

A striking American Sterling Silver Double Handled Tea Strainer. The detail work on this piece is exceptional with its ornate decorated bowl. Also, the handles have lovely flowing flowers and are a lovely example of Art Nouveau workmanship. There is a mark Sterling and 2788 which is located on the back of the piece. Crisp detail makes this tea strainer a very appealing piece.
