Art Nouveau features asymmetrical, flowing botanical motifs, and elaborate workmanship. Articles were often made from glass, silver, gold, wood as well as iron and ceramics. Silver was often used as an intricate overlay on materials such as glass. Silver was also used as filigree and/or for repousse objects.

In general, a typical flask is usually square or rectangular with a screw-top lid for extra security for the contents inside. Sterling silver and glass flasks reached their peak popularity between the late 1800s and the 1920s. Driven by the American Prohibition era (1920 – 1933), silver flasks skyrocketed in demand as individuals needed discreet ways to transport alcohol. As flasks are small and discreet, they could easily be concealed in men’s clothes, or in a lady’s purse. Silver and pewter flasks are very popular because they are found to react the least with the liquids they hold.

An elegant Antique American Art Nouveau Sterling Silver and Glass Flask which combines practicality and sophisticated design with its intricately flowing foliate and scroll motifs. The hand-pierced silver design reveals the glass beneath, creating a refined contrast. The compact, gently curved form is fitted with a hinged cap. The lid is marked “Sterling” indicating high-quality silver craftsmanship. The overall design reflects late 19th century to early 20th century decorative sensibilities, blending functionality with ornamental artistry.
