The mid-nineteenth century witnessed an unbelievable boom in creativity in the American silver industry. This was fueled by the middle classes increasing demand for refined luxury goods. Silversmiths devoted considerable time and creative energy to generating an endless variety of new designs and patterns. During the 1860s and 1870s, silver flatware was ornamented with portrait medallions inspired by antique coins and cameos, and enjoyed widespread popularity. In 1862, the German-born silversmith John R. Wendt received the first patent for a medallion pattern. As it turns out, this pattern inspired other variations of the design. Also, at this time, production shifted from 900 grade coin silver to the standard 925 sterling silver, as we know it today.

An Antique Gorham Medallion Pattern Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle retailed by M.W. Galt & Bro. is a rare 19th century antique piece, which was introduced in 1862. It is prized for its Neoclassical styling. The terminal (tip or very end) of the handle features a detailed medallion of a man wearing a helmet, a script monogram on the back of the handle and a pointed style serving bowl. There is also bright cut engraving on the bowl and the sauce ladle is in pristine condition.

The Gorham Medallion pattern is an exceptional choice and is highly sought-after among antique silver collectors, high-end design curators and everyone else in between.
