First documented in Ancient Rome, salt cellars became extremely popular in England during the Elizabethan era ( 1558 to 1603). In those times, in poorer homes, the usual vessels for salt were simple wooden trenchers; in more affluent homes they would be made of pottery or glass and eventually they were made in porcelain. The wealthiest of homes had salt presented in large and fantastic centerpieces of gold and silver.
An exquisite set of 4 American Sterling Silver Salt Cellars that are designed in a simple, classical style. Residing on three hoof feet, they have shaped gadroon borders. These are applied directly to the top edge.
The salt cellars are in pristine condition and are very well marked on the bases. These salt cellars are a very good reproduction of a George II style.
