Calling cards were also known as visiting cards, and were first used in France in the 18th century. As they immediately became quite popular, the rest of Europe and the United Kingdom started to use them and it became fashionable to do. With the emergence of the Industrial Age, the cards became fancier, colorful and more sophisticated. Not only for the upper class, but also now the middle class could and did use them. By the beginning of the 20th century, they began to fall out of favor. However, card trays are still being used today but more so as a place to leave your house and car keys. Card Trays are quite often made in silver, papier mache and even wood.
A lovely 19th century English Papier Mache Card Tray from the Regency period. It is beautifully hand painted with its decoration of gilt branches, leaves and flowers. Charming in design, this 19th century English Card Tray has wonderful workmanship. Please note that there has been a repair to this piece. However, the repair has been done so well that it is not even noticeable.
