Antique wine coasters have become objects d’art. When the earliest wine coasters started to appear around 1760, they were hand pierced in design. In fact, as silver was so popular at that time, they generally were quite elaborate. This was a wonderful way for silversmiths to show off their ornamentation skills. Their feeling was the more elaborate, the better! During the Victorian era, their popularity diminished as claret jugs became the fashionable way to serve wine. However, the 20th century saw a resurgence in production of the wine coaster and they are extremely popular today as a wine related accessory. We have wine coasters that are quite simple and elegant as well as extremely elaborate and wonderful ones in detail.
An exquisite early 19th century Old Sheffield Plate Wine Coaster. The hand pierced decoration on the sides has been done extremely well and this Old Sheffield Plate Wine Coaster is in pristine condition. It is fitted with a mahogany base and the underside is covered with baize (felt) to protect the table.
