Antique Victorian Plate Asparagus Tongs

Sold
  • Sheffield, circa 1885 by Mappin and Webb
  • Dimensions: 9 inches long

Asparagus did not become popular as a vegetable in England until the early 18th century. This popularity was due to asparagus being considered an exotic accompaniment for other dishes. Thus, Asparagus Tongs became the acceptable item at the dinner table during the Victorian era. This was due to the strict social conventions on dining decorum and formal parties which was de riguer at this time.

A charming pair of Antique Victorian Plate Asparagus Tongs. They are designed with a wonderful classical style with the handles having a pierced design. These Asparagus Tongs are easy to use and very helpful in getting the asparagus off of the serving dish and onto your dinner plate.

Antique Victorian Plate Asparagus Tongs are another fascinating item which help remind us of a bygone era, while also still being very useful and practical in the 21st century.
