A lovely lacquer depiction of a Burmese woman holding an offering in the form of a traditional papier-mache container. Buddhism is the prominent religion of Myanmar and offerings can include food, flowers, burning of incense etc. This is an honored tradition. Buddhism is a path of practice and spiritual development leading to insight into the true nature of reality. Their practices like meditation are means of changing yourself in order to develop the qualities of awareness, kindness and wisdom.
The outfit in this wall hanging is of a wealthy woman as noted by her lovely decorated traditional dress (a sarong called a longyi which both men and women wear). It also includes a stole, hair ornaments and parasol all of which are quite elaborate. This wall hanging is set on a black background and highlighted with a gold frame.
