Sugar Casters have been used since the 17th century, when sugar was a prized commodity and became a common household item in the Victorian period. The shape and the form of a silver sugar caster is based on the need to sprinkle sugar when sweetening drinks or food. Having a domed cover with pierced decoration, the caster allows sugar to pass through delicately and gradually, while the soft bottom of the caster is the container for the sugar.
There is an important difference between a silver sugar caster and a silver pepper caster. The key difference is that sugar casters tend to be slightly larger as they hold a greater amount of sugar than pepper. Pepper casters are smaller ( 4 -5 inches high) and sugar casters are larger (6 -8 inches high).
