Decanters come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes depending upon their intended use. The original purpose of the decanter was to serve wine at the table once it had been decanted from the bottle or barrel. It was not until the second half of the 18th century that stoppers were introduced, allowing for the storage of spirits. A stopper minimizes contact with the air and preserves the liquid within.
A wonderful Antique 18th century English Decanter. It has a distinctive barrel-like shape, featuring a broad base and a neck that tapers toward the stopper. Having two neck rings and a bullseye stopper completes the look of this piece. Neck rings are a traditional feature to some decanters adding to their aesthetic appeal. They provide a better grip and prevent fingers from slipping.
