Asparagus was cultivated and consumed by the Ancient Romans; however, it was introduced to England during the sixteenth century and did not become popular there until the early eighteenth century. At that time, asparagus got the reputation for being an exotic and interesting accompaniment to other dishes.
What a wonderful and complete set this Antique Victorian Plate Asparagus Dish is! The dish has an oval body with an applied shell and gadroon border and looks quite elegant. The Asparagus Dish has a wire-work serving rack (used to hold the asparagus and is removable) and a sauce boat residing on its frame. The sauce boat, which can be used to serve a hollandaise sauce or butter sauce, has the identical design, workmanship and maker’s mark that the rest of the piece has.
