Antique Victorian Plate Toast Rack

$325.00
  • Sheffield, circa 1890
  • Dimensions: Height - 5 inches, Width - 4 inches

It is believed that toast racks started to appear on the breakfast table in the 1780’s. This was in part because of the refinement of dining customs among the middle class. The purpose was to keep the slices of toast separate, allowing steam to escape and prevent the toast from becoming soggy. Therefore, it was, an essential object to have in the home and still appears on breakfast tables to this day.

A simple and very attractive Antique Victorian Silver Plate five-bar Toast Rack. It resides on an oblong base and is supported by four mushroom feet.

As many antique articles have evolved over time, the toast rack has as well. Toast Racks quite often can be used now for letters, bills, and other paper articles.
