Staffordshire refers to a type of pottery that originated in Staffordshire, England in the 17th century. This area became a major center for ceramic production. By the 19th century, Staffordshire was home to hundreds of pottery manufacturers producing a wide range of English Staffordshire Dogs. These are replicas of the King Charles Spaniel dogs which was and is the favorite animal of choice in England. Pairs of Staffordshire Dogs became popular very quickly. No fashionable or well to do home would be without at least one pair. This was “the look” at that time in decorating one’s home. Pairs were most often found on the fireplace mantel and window sills. Staffordshire Dogs also became very popular because of their connection to Queen Victoria. She had a spaniel named “Darling Dashy Dash” which she wrote about glowingly in her journals.

They are decorated with gilt (gold) collars, chains, and a locket. They also have black noses that enhance this pair and makes them quite special and loveable.
In today’s society, Staffordshire Dogs are still decorative and beloved items as well as symbolizing the English countryside life.
