Pair of English Silver Plate Wine Coasters

Wine Coasters are a perfect example of the result of changing social customs which also affected articles made in silver. We can assume someone probably conceived the idea of placing a wine bottle in a stand and pushing (“coasting”) it along the table. This explains why the original name was a ‘bottle slider’. The underside of the coaster is fitted with felt to prevent any markings on the polished mahogany tables.
