Mason’s is a renowned English pottery company with a long history of producing high-quality china and ceramics. The company, originally known as “Mason’s Ironstone,” was founded by Miles Mason in 1813. Mason was a Staffordshire pottery merchant, and he played an instrumental role in the development of ironstone china. This type of ceramic was known for its durability, affordability, and sturdiness which makes it suitable for everyday use. Individuals now were able to enjoy fine china and because of the cost, making it more accessible to a broader range of customers.

Mason’s is known for its skillful use of transfer painting to create elaborate and colorful designs. Many of their patterns depict scenes, landscapes, and floral motifs, often inspired by Chinese and Asian art, which was highly fashionable during the 18th and 19th centuries.

A very interesting set of 6 Antique English Mason’s Ironstone Plates in the “Coloured Wall” Pattern. They are hand painted and decorated in a striking chinoiserie design consisting mostly of wonderful vibrant tones in burnt orange/red and blue. Other colors which resonate in this plate, are greens, pinks, yellows, and light blue. In the center of each plate which is set on a white background, are exceptional Asian motifs such as pagodas, flowering trees, and of course, kumquats. To finish the design on these plates, is a hand-painted cobalt blue border with burnt orange and red flowers as well as having gilt interspersed.

On the back of each of our 6 Antique English Mason’s Ironstone Plates is a transfer painted crown and banner. The word ‘England’ is also on the back. These plates have the mark ‘University Arms Hotel Cambridge’ which also makes them quite special. The University Arms Hotel Cambridge has been a leading luxury hotel since 1834 and is considered the best hotel in Cambridge. Situated in the heart of Cambridge’s City Centre, this hotel offers wonderful views of historic Regent Street. If you visit Cambridge, this hotel is a must. It is now owned by the Marriott Company.

This set of 6 Mason’s Ironstone Plates is in wonderful condition, extremely well hand-painted and are quite vibrant with their design.
