Antique Victorian Plate Wine Funnel

A wine funnel is a perfect gift for either someone who appreciates wine or a wine connoisseur. Antique Silver Plated Wine Funnels were developed towards the end of the 18th century as they were a necessity for decanting wines from the cask to a decanter. Original examples were quite plain and simple, with tapering spigots connecting to plain bowls. They would have been filled with muslin to remove fine sediments and ensure the finished product to be as pure as it can be. The vast majority of wine funnels were circular in shape and are typically made in two halves fitted together. This includes having a removable pierced silver strainer. The end of the spout is usually curved so that the wine would flow down the side of the bottle to prevent aeration that would have devalued the wine. Over time, the bowls deepened and funnels became larger and more elaborate in their decoration.
