It is believed that silver toast racks started to appear on the breakfast tables from the 1780’s as part of the general refinement of dining customs. The purpose of this was to keep the slices of toast separate, thus allowing steam to escape and prevent them from becoming soggy. It was, therefore, an essential object to have in the home. In fact, they still appear on some breakfast tables to this day. Of course, many today have found other purposes for the toast rack such as using it as a letter rack to hold your mail.

A simple American Sterling Silver Vintage five-bar Small Toast Rack. Residing on an oblong base and supported by four ball feet, it is quite attractive in design.
