Claret Jugs were produced throughout Europe beginning in the 19th century. Although France had a large production of fine silver and glass jugs, the diverse and often beautiful designs that we are able to appreciate today, were British. A glass body allows the color of the wine to be seen. This was first noted due to the popularity of the Bordeaux wine from France. Also, a silver mount allowed Silversmiths to create and show off their wonderfully ornate designs. Intricate naturalistic motifs were very popular and the flora and fauna were the most frequently used during this period. Eventually, the art from the Far East began to influence all kinds of work. The claret jug was a perfect way to show off the delicate designs and the floral decoration that was so dominant at this time.

A handsome Antique Victorian Silver Plate Claret Jug that is quite stunning in design. It is exemplified with a wonderful intricate design of a Bacchus face on the spout. To complement this silver plated workmanship, is an exquisite striking etched body. It is decorated with desirable cut glass decoration which is in perfect condition. To finish off this piece, there is a flat star-cut base.
