Pair of Antique Victorian Plate Tapersticks

The first pair of silver tapersticks were produced during the latter part of the 17th century. Tapersticks are small table candlesticks (generally 4 to 5 inches in height) designed to hold a wax taper which is a small thin tapered candle. Many tapersticks are miniature copies of the period table candlesticks of that particular era.

These small tapersticks would typically be found on a desk. They were often used in many ways during the 18th century. Some tapersticks were included as part of inkstands, as letters were often sealed with wax melted over the small candle flames. Tapersticks were also used as chambersticks due to being small, light and easy to carry from room to room. They were also used for the lighting of tobacco as well as pipes and even to light large candles.

Our pair of Antique Plate Tapersticks are in a plain classical form and an exemplary copy of a George I style (circa 1720). They reside on square bases with incuse (cut) corners.
