An American 20th century Silver Plate Overlay Design on a clear Glass Plate. The plate has a lovely silver floral overlay design which resonates throughout the piece. Silver overlay is an electroplated coating of silver on a non – conductive surface such as porcelain or glass. The techniques of depositing the silver involve painting the design onto the glass with flux containing silver mixed with turpentine. This design is then fired in a kiln and afterwards sits while it cools. It is then immersed in a solution of silver through which a tiny electric current is passed. The silver is then built up on the area where the design had been painted, creating a permanent fusion of the silver with the glass.
