Antique Silver Christening Mugs

Christening gifts have been given for centuries as part of the Christian ceremony to welcome a child into the world and this religion. Silver christening gifts are given because silver is traditionally thought to be beneficial for health. Also, silver was associated with wealth and prosperity due to its value and appearance so this was the natural gift to give. Silver christening gifts would signify the gift giver’s desire for health and success to the child.

There are many types of christening gifts which have become traditional choices over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Antique silver spoons have always been quite popular as well as napkin rings and porringers. However, the most popular christening gift since the late 18th century, is the mug. This is because it symbolizes nourishment which will help the baby grow to be healthy and strong. Mugs are often engraved with initials of the child, a monogram or even a family crest.
