Antique Silver Mugs

During the late 17th century, an offspring of the tankard known as the mug, was introduced. The term mug is traditionally considered a single-handled drinking vessel without a lid. Mugs hold either a half a pint or a pint of liquid. Seventeenth and eighteenth century examples of silver mugs were predominately used for alcoholic beverages. During the nineteenth century, it became a popular fashion to give a silver mug as a gift.
