In the world of antiques, silver that is either German or Italian in origin generally falls under the term “Continental Silver”. The term refers to silver that does not follow the English Sterling standard of purity. It actually is a very large category that encompasses not only German and Italian silver but also Austrian, Portuguese, Spanish and Eastern European silver items from all periods. Essentially, any silver that is not English, French or American is considered Continental Silver.
I do not want people to get confused when one scrolls down the 20th century silver articles that are in this section. You will notice that there are some articles that are marked antique and others are not. For a piece to be considered antique, the general rule is that the article must be over 100 years old. Therefore, silver items that were made before 1920 would be classified as antique. Any articles that were made prior to 1920 will be found in the Antique Silver and the 20th Century Silver categories. Any silver items that were made after this time is not considered an antique and will only be placed in the 20th Century Silver section.
